Wherever you live in the UK, winter walks can be filled with snow-capped mountains, icy forest scenes or crisp countryside. As the seasons change, so does your wardrobe, so it's crucial to be prepared and know what to wear when walking in winter.
This blog covers our winter walking essentials that can be shopped in-store. Our showroom is located just off the M5 at Junction 13 for all your outdoor and camping equipment.
Base Layers
Your base layer clothing is the foundation of your winter walking gear. Sitting directly on your skin, it will wick away the moisture and keep you comfortable and dry. Wool or polyester are used for base layers because they can cool your body down quickly in warmer temperatures and keep you warm and dry in the winter months.
With advanced thermal technology, the Heat Machine brand guarantees warmth with its range of base layer products. Long sleeve T-shirts and Long johns for men and women are made using a poly-viscose blend for comfortable wear. With a warm rating of 3, we're sure you’ll stay nice and cosy on your next winter walk with these fantastic base layers!
Fleeces
Your fleece is there to trap the body heat and is an essential item for winter walking. Whether you like a pull-over fleece, quarter zip or fleece jacket, there is something for everyone in our Attwoolls camping shop. Fleeces provide a layer of insulation under your coat but still allow your body to breathe.
Shop top brands such as Sprayway, Craghoppers and Regatta with good quality fleeces in a variety of styles, patterns and colours for Men and Women. The Craghoppers Esk fleece is ideal for outdoor adventures. It has advanced insulating layers offering warmth, and the shape allows for easy movement. It is also made from recycled plastic bottles, reducing carbon emissions and landfill waste.
Coats
The coat acts as the outer layer, protecting you from wind and water. Investing in a good quality coat is a must when walking in winter. Find a coat that is both waterproof and breathable to keep you dry from the outside whilst allowing moisture to escape from within.
The brand Sprayway offers quality coats for Men and Women and is stocked in our showroom. Lightweight and easy to wear, it's made using HydroDry fabric with mesh and taffeta lining to aid moisture movement. The wired hood will keep rain and wind at bay, and the two zipped pockets will keep your snacks and valuables secure.
Trousers
Your legs need protection too, so consider warm trousers, leggings or waterproof layers to wear when walking this winter. A durable pair of trousers with a soft shell are ideal for dryer walking trips. If you're planning to walk in the snow or wet weather, then opt for a waterproof pair of trousers. These are flexible and brilliant for adverse travel conditions over existing trousers, packing small so you can whip them off when the weather brightens.
The Craghoppers Kiwi Classic trousers offer a relaxed fit and reliable performance all around. Top features include part elasticated waist, nine pockets, UPF+ sun protection and double knee and seat. We stock these in two colours, black pepper and bark, so come into the store to view and try on ready for your next winter walking adventure!
Walking Boots
Choosing the correct footwear will make or break your winter walking trip. Your feet need to stay warm and dry; cold feet will make your trip miserable. Choose walking boots that have good grip, insulated and waterproof. Leather walking boots are the best for winter walking, and they are inherently waterproof and easy to clean. Keep your feet cosy and avoid frostbite with a quality walking boot!
We stock a variety of walking boots in store for whatever your adventure throws at you. Popular brands such as Grisport and HiTec can be viewed and tried on. Our bestselling boot is the Quattro Leather walking boot, with excellent foot support and a waterproof membrane ideal for wetter weather. Manufactured in Italy, they are made using waxed leather, offering comfort even on the steepest of terrains.
Accessories
Don’t forget your walking accessories like gloves, neck warmers and hats this winter. It's easy to overlook the smaller parts of your body, but keeping your head, hands and neck warm is crucial. Choose wool or fleece accessories for ultimate warmth and comfortable walking.
If you're hiking in snow or extremely wet weather, consider buying gaiters to protect your ankles. Gaiters guard the gap between your hiking boots and trousers, safeguarding your skin from wind, rain and snow.
A decent pair of socks is also essential if you're unsure what to wear for winter walking. Hiking socks boast qualities such as moisture-wicking, cushioned toes and extra ankle support, unlike regular socks. Brands such as 1000 Miles and Bridgedale can be found in our showroom and are perfect for winter walking trips.
A final note from us
Layering up is key when shopping for winter walking essentials. Investing in good, quality clothing specifically for walking will ensure you are prepared for whatever the trail throws at you. Don’t forget about crucial pieces like base layers, hiking socks and wool gloves to keep your body warm and comfortable.

Staying warm and dry is a must when walking in winter.
In recent years, many who want to be financially free and travel the world have embraced this unique lifestyle.
All over the globe, people are switching their 9-5 office jobs for a life on the road. The rise of remote working means you can be anywhere with a reliable internet connection and earn a decent living. This blog discusses what Van Life is and its benefits, so read on and see if this life is for you!
Benefits of Van Life
Whether this is the first time you have come across the term ‘Van Life’ or looking to see if living on the road is a life for you, there are many benefits to consider when living in a van full-time.
Freedom and Adventure
People choose to live in vans for freedom and adventure. Are you also hungry for your next trip? Consider choosing van life, and the world is your oyster! Waking up to a new destination every other day or week is exciting and gives you a reason to explore. Van life allows for extensive travel without the constraints of traditional holiday schedules and accommodation.
Why limit yourself to UK travel? Van life means you can travel all over the world! Popular YouTube digital nomads like Craig and Aimee from the channel ‘Kinging It’ have done just that. Documenting their travels since 2014, they bought a old school bus converted it for travels across the UK and Europe. Feeling inspired? Check out their YouTube channel here.
Connection to Nature
Living in a van means reconnecting with nature by discovering national parks, botanical gardens, coastal areas, and rural landscapes worldwide. Unlike in England, wild camping is legal in Scotland, and countries like the USA and Canada also allow it but check local advice before doing so.
Environmental Impact
Many people opt for Van Life over traditional living in a building because of the potential environmental impact. Living in a van encourages a more sustainable way of living. Vans are small, and you will need to downsize your personal belongings. The lack of space means you can’t just buy new furniture or clothing; you have to be conscious of your spending and what items you need.
Living in a van also reduces energy consumption. Whether you are solo or in a pair, you are likely to use far fewer electrical items and heat appliances. Vans often have LED lights, which consume less energy than traditional bulbs. The appliances in a van are designed to run on 12 V power, which is more efficient than standard household appliances.
You may also consider adding Solar panels to the exterior of your vehicle. These panels will harness energy to power lights and electricals as well as charge batteries, even when your stationery. Solar Generators and Batteries also store energy during the day for use at night.
Off-Grid Living
Living in a van full time can benefit you, which is a massive draw for some. Using renewable energy sources and compostable toilets reduces your consumption of external utilities, allowing you to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
Mental Health
The simplicity of living in a van can lead to less stress and a greater sense of freedom. Your connection to nature and control over your destination will improve your mood. If you're used to big cities, stepping back from polluted areas and urban noise will affect your mental well-being. A whole host of people are choosing to switch to living in a van full-time, and they are very supportive on social media. We offer support, tips, and tricks if you're new to this lifestyle.
You may also find that living in a van increases your work/life balance. Having the freedom to choose where you stay can be inspiring, help job satisfaction, and reduce burnout. Prioritizing your personal growth and experiences encourages a better work/life balance and is a massive benefit to Van Life.
Types of Vans
Cargo Vans - When researching Van Life, we found a few types of vans to consider. Cargo vans are often transformed into full-time living vans because they offer head space and length. It’s the most customizable van style and popular for DIY campers. Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit are the two most popular makes of vehicle great for van life. Tall and Long, they can comfortably fit beds, a kitchen, a table and a bathroom for extra comfort.
New Campervan—Looking for something to get in and go? Many websites, like Quirkycampers and Campers4Sale, offer new and used campervans for sale. This will remove the stress and money from converting your van, allowing more time to enjoy it!
Passenger Vans—Passenger vans can also be converted to full-time vans. The exterior will have more windows and a reduced head height. One thing to consider is that passenger vehicles are used for ferrying people around, so they are likely to have high mileage and require a lot more work to convert compared to cargo vans.
Pop-Top Campervan—You can also consider a pop-top campervan. They are great for head height and storage; they lack width but make up for height! Pop-top camper vans come in various layouts, sizes, and prices and are a great option for budget buyers. Some have kitchens just behind the driver's seat, and others use that space for sleeping. If you're travelling as a trio, a pop-top campervan is perfect.
VW Campervan - The most traditional van of all is the VW campervan. What is lacks in space it makes up for in style. Often having one living/sleeping area and kitchen stored under the bed accessible from the rear door.
Things to consider
Like living in a house, there are certain things to consider when switching to van life full-time. This is not just about choosing the right style of van but also about everyday factors that will affect your van life experience.
Security
This unique lifestyle comes with safety challenges. Ensure you have locks on your windows and doors to stop unwanted intruders day and night. Your van becomes your home, so you should take precautions similar to those in a normal house. Installing an alarm in your van is also key, and staying in recognised sites overnight or well-lit areas is less likely to attract thieves.
Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Using propane heaters inside your van can increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure you install detectors to help alert you of potential danger.
Fire Safety
Take caution when cooking in your van and ensure you have a fire extinguisher fitted inside in case of any cooking accidents. It would also be useful to have a fire blanket not just for inside your van but for campsite fires. Always make sure it's fully extinguished before going to bed or leaving the area.
Emergency Back-up
Although we like everything to run smoothly, occasional emergencies do happen, so it's important to have a plan ready. Keep a notebook in the front of your van with emergency numbers, including Insurance, Breakdown cover, and medical assistance, for when problems arise. If you're planning an overseas trip, make sure you know which services are available to you before you set off on your journey.

Both Polyester and Polycotton fabrics have pros and cons, so we hope this guide will give you a rundown of everything you need to know when choosing the right fabric for you.
What is Polyester Fabric?
Polyester is a fabric identified as either denier or thread count. The higher the denier/thread count, the higher the quality and durability of your tent will be. Commonly seen in women's hosiery, denier/thread count can be categorized as 70, 150, and 420, with 70 being the lowest and 420 being the highest quality.
Polyester is a popular fabric choice for campers because it is lightweight but also robust. Family campers tend to opt for 70 and 150 denier/thread count when choosing a tent for their holidays. The higher denier/thread count, 420, is mainly used for premium camping products such as caravan and motorhome awnings because they are left out all season.
70 Denier - Lowest level
150 Denier - Medium level
420 Denier - Highest level
Pros of Polyester Fabric
One of the main advantages of choosing a polyester tent is its weight. They are incredibly lightweight and great for single campers or adventure seekers. Polyester tents are also more weight-effective and ideal for single parents, so you don’t need to lug a huge, heavy tent from your car to the pitch.
Value for money is another major advantage of most polyester tents. If you're new to camping and not looking to break the bank, then choosing a polyester tent will be a great fit for you. Brands like Kampa offer great-quality polyester tents for families with all the important features at a fraction of the price.
Polyester tents are also quick-drying. We all know the British weather is notorious for being unpredictable, and polyester tents are perfect for UK camping. Packing away a dry tent is crucial for making your tent last longer. No one likes a smelly, mouldy tent when the summer season rolls around, so having a fast-drying tent will be ideal.
Con’s of a Polyester Fabric
Unlike Polycotton, Polyester is not breathable, and tents will build up condensation if the weather is hot and muggy. This is a major disadvantage of Polyester fabric. If more moisture is in the air, this fabric will be difficult to leave, resulting in a wet tent.
Most polyester tents are manufactured with a sewn-in groundsheet. This is a bonus for many people, but for a polyester tent, this reduces the breathability inside the tent. In hot weather, it will be extremely warm as it soaks up the sun and does not release it back out. Equally, in colder weather, polyester tents do not retain heat, which is why polyester tents are recommended for British weather conditions.
If you're looking for a tent to survive a lifetime of camping, then polyester tents are not for you. 70 and 150 denier fabric is perfect for camping every so often for 7-10 days at a time but not for long periods. If your plans involve camping for four weeks of the summer, then think again! Polyester tents deteriorate quicker over time and are a great starting tent for families to go camping.
Conclusion
The two main factors when choosing a polyester tent are climate and life expectancy. Polyester tents are great value for money and perfect for first-time campers. Backpackers will also benefit from their light weight and quick drying time for unpredictable British weather.
What is Polycotton Fabric?
Polycotton fabric is a hybrid fabric using cotton and polyester. The split varies from brand to brand, but the cotton ratio will always be higher. The higher ratio of cotton makes the fabric feel like canvas, similar to a traditional tipi tent for reference.
Polycotton tents require a weathering process to make them waterproof before use. Skip to ‘Con’s of Polycotton fabric’ to find out more.
Pros of Polycotton Fabric
One of the main advantages of choosing a polycotton tent is its breathability. Unlike Polyester fabric, polycotton tents increase airflow inside your tent. The fabric adapts to the environment it's in, so in warm climates, it will remain cool, and in colder climates, it will feel comfortable.
Polycotton tents aren’t limited to the UK. Top brands like Zempire and Dometic use polycotton fabrics, appealing to customers from South America to New Zealand. Polycotton fabrics create comfortable camping and reduce condensation. Polycotton also allows moisture to pass through easily.
Choosing a polycotton tent will increase its longevity, ensuring years of camping fun! With UV protection, polycotton fabrics will reduce colour fading, keeping your tent feeling brand new every year.
Con’s of Polycotton fabric
The weight of your polycotton tent is one of the main factors you should consider when choosing a polycotton tent. With a higher cotton ratio, Polycotton tents are much heavier, which in turn increases the pack size. It’s important to check the weight (usually in kilograms) of the product description before purchasing a polycotton tent and be honest about whether the size and weight are something you can handle before ordering.
Polycotton tents are manufactured to last, which, of course, comes at a price. It’s no secret that polycotton tents are more pricey than your average polyester version, but these better-performance tents reflect the added pounds.
Waterproofing Process
As touched on above, polycotton tents must be weathered before use, which could be a disadvantage to some. It’s a simple process: your tent needs to be pitched in the garden, hosed down with water, and left to dry.
The water activates the cotton, making it waterproof when used again. The fabric will swell when wet and then tighten together. If you see dark streaks on your tent after doing this, this is an indication of missed areas. Don’t worry; when it rains, these will disperse, and your tent will be waterproof all over.
Conclusion
If you're looking for a top-performing tent, then Polycotton is for you. Durability and breathability are the main factors that set it apart from polyester. Ideal for intermediate campers holidaying not just in the UK but all over the globe, polycotton tents are higher in price but worth it.
A final note from us
Whether you choose Polyester or polycotton for your next camping getaway, both fabrics have a mix of pros and cons to consider. Weight, breathability, and life span are all main factors, depending on what type of camper you are. We hope this blog has helped you understand the difference better and aid you in your decision of what fabric is best for you.

Are you on the hunt for a tent this summer and not sure where to start? One question we get asked repeatedly is what is the difference between Polyester and Polycotton fabric for tents?
Are you new to caravanning or looking to upgrade your current caravan awning set-up? Inflatable caravan awnings are air-filled tubes that create the structure of your awning in exchange for the traditional poled structure.
Read on to discover more about inflatable awnings in this simple guide, which includes some of our top inflatable caravan awnings featured at the bottom of this blog.
What are inflatable caravan awnings?
Kampa launched inflatable awnings in 2013 as the latest caravanning trend. At the time, Inflatable tents were just gaining popularity across the camping market, so it was a natural progression into inflatable caravan awnings.
Quick and easy to erect, caravan awnings quickly became a popular product within the caravanning community. Other brands followed suit and created their own versions of Inflatable awnings.
Think of the Air beam as a bike tyre. The inner bladder expands when air is pumped in, and the surrounding case holds the air tube shape.
This is then covered with a zipped fabric cover to protect and maintain the structure of the beam. Unlike bike tyres, there is a lot less pressure applied to the airbeam, so your caravan awning remains intact and in perfect shape for your caravan trip.
What are the advantages of Inflatable Caravan Awnings?
One of the main advantages of the inflatable caravan awning is convenience. You can quickly set up and pack away your caravanning trip, allowing more time to enjoy yourself with friends and family.
Typically, much lighter, inflatable caravan awnings are designed for adventures and changed how caravan holidays were perceived.
Relying solely on air structure means your inflatable caravan awning is lightweight, easy to erect, and a lot less trouble than its poled counterpart. You no longer need to worry about poles; all you need is a good pump, and away you go!
Structured with robust fabric, air-pumped beams allow for more space in your caravan awning and extend the living diameters. This can be used for entertaining, eating, cooking, and even sleeping, with some caravan awnings providing extra sleeping pods!
Are Inflatable Caravan Awnings Reliable?
Inflatable caravan awning beams perform well in windy conditions and will never snap as fiberglass poles do. We recommend always having a replacement air beam for your model of awning packed for every caravanning trip.
Although not common, airbeams can burst in hot temperatures, so try to position your inflatable caravan awning in shady areas on the caravan site and, if not possible, check your airbeams daily for pressure.
Different makes and models of caravan awnings will have varying recommended pressures for beams. Check this before you purchase an air awning, as an overinflated air beam will cause more damage than good!
The all-in-one design makes inflatable caravan awnings perfect for the caravan site. You no longer need to worry about which part fits where and which pole is for which section. Spend less time worrying about your set-up and more time enjoying your holiday with inflatable caravan awnings!

To enjoy the beauty of winter camping, you will need more than just a padded coat.
Discover our top 5 winter camping must-haves to keep you safe, comfortable, and ready to embrace the great outdoors.
1 - Winter Layers
Warm layers are essential for winter camping because they provide better insulation, flexibility, and moisture control. Layering allows you to trap heat efficiently by creating pockets of warm air between each layer, which helps maintain body temperature in freezing conditions.
You should always check the weather forecast before you book a winter camping trip. Cold temperatures and stormy conditions are expected on mountain tops, so having the correct clothing is essential.
Recommended - Craghoppers Esk Half Zip Fleece (in-store only)
2 - Sleeping Comfortably
Use a sleeping bag rated for temperatures lower than expected, and add a liner for extra warmth. Sleeping bags with a mummy design trap heat more efficiently. Consider taking a camp bed or self-inflating mat to raise you from the ground.
If this is not possible, pack an emergency foil blanket to lay under your sleeping bag to reflect the heat back to your body.
Recommended - Vango Zenith 400 Sleeping Bag
3 - Stay Fuelled
Cold temperatures cause your body to work harder to maintain its core temperature. This increased energy expenditure requires more calories to sustain warmth and energy levels.
If your winter camping trip involves hiking or camping in challenging conditions, make sure you pack plenty of meals and snacks to fuel your body.
Recommended - Trekmates Chilli con carne
4 - Light up your Tent
As the winter days are shorter, packing good lighting will help you navigate your campsite and surroundings after dark, preventing trips and falls. Winter weather conditions can be unpredictable, so adequate lighting will help you cook, organise your gear, set up, and pack away your tent without fumbling in the dark.
Head torches, hand torches, and hanging lanterns are all great options for winter camping. With proper lighting, you can also enjoy camping games in your tent after sunset.
Recommended - Kampa Beacon LED Lantern
5 - Stay protected
When camping in winter, try positioning your tent under a sheltered area to protect you from the elements. Sheltered areas, such as those surrounded by trees, hills, or natural barriers, will block cold winds and reduce wind exposure.
If your campsite is open, consider adding a windbreak to add that extra insulation layer.
Recommended - Kampa Windbreak Blue

Enjoy your Christmas at one of the UK’s top glamping destinations. If you’re looking for something a little bit different this Christmas, consider a glamping getaway.
If you’re looking for something a bit different this year, consider camping at Christmas and all the joys (and tidings) it brings!
Embrace the magic of Christmas with this handy guide with everything you need to know about Camping at Christmas.
Book in Advance
Like summer, winter camping hot spots get booked up well in advance, so make sure you book early to secure your perfect Christmas campsite. Not all campsites in the UK cater to winter holidaymakers, so do your research in advance to find a site that does and is open for the festive period!
Pack appropriately
Camping in winter can have disadvantages, one of which is the weather! Warm, breathable clothing is essential for cosy nights in front of the fire. Nobody likes chilly hands and feet, so make sure you pack multiple layers, such as thermal tops, leggings, fleeces, scarfs, and hats, to make your winter camping trip enjoyable.
Heating your accommodation
Whether you're staying in a yurt, tent, or camping lodge, make sure you check what heating facilities are available for your trip. Before setting off, ensure your heaters are fully functional and know how to use them safely in your tent. If you have an open fire, you may need to come prepared with wood and fire starters.
Christmas Cooking
Are you planning to cook up a Christmas feast? Cooking on the campsite can be tricky, so check the campsite's cooking facilities before booking. Some sites will have communal kitchens, and others will require you to bring your own cooking equipment. Consider cooking some festive dishes to keep you in the Christmas spirit, like one-pot roast turkey, mulled wine on the hob, and cinnamon chocolate pancakes.
Don’t forget to Decorate!
Remember to decorate your camping area. Fairy lights, tinsel, bunting, and LED candles will all add atmosphere to your tent or caravan when camping at Christmas. If you're camping with kids, this can be a great activity to do if the weather turns bad. Let your artistic flare flow with paper chain angles or wreath-making with foraged foliage around the campsite.
Christmas Presents
If you’re camping at Christmas on the 25th of December, don’t forget to pack the presents! Keep the magic alive for the little ones by ensuring Father Christmas knows where your campsite lot is. You could even write a letter for Father Christmas in the lead-up to the day with the campsite address to make it extra believable. Not camping with kids? Opening presents on Christmas morning is a must-do whatever age you are!
Discover Local events
With thousands of campsites all over the UK in wonderful locations, make sure you check out local events when camping at Christmas time. Local artisan markets and festive-themed activities are in abundance this time of year. Enjoy a local Christmas light switch-on or festive trail with all the family.

As the festive season approaches, there’s no better way to soak in the magic of Christmas than with a jolly winter walk.
This handy blog offers our top tips for keeping food cold and preventing spoilage.
Invest in a quality Cool Box
A high-performance cool box is a must when camping in the summer. Invest in a good-quality, thick-walled cooler with a tight seal to keep your food and beverage fresher for longer. Brands like Vango, Coleman, and Outwell all stock premium cool boxes in various sizes to store your food and drinks with ease and retain up to five days of ice.
Recommended - Vango Glacier 47L Cool Box
Pre-chill your food
Pre-chilling your cooler is also a great way to ensure your food and drink stay cold. Simply fill it with ice a few days before leaving to help it stay cold when you start to use it. It is also crucial to keep your cooler out of direct sunlight and in a shady area of your tent. Cover the cooler with a water blanket or towel to prevent the sun from heating it up.
Freeze Food ahead of time
Freeze meats, cheese, and pre-cooked meals ahead of time, which will serve as additional ice blocks in your cooler. You can also freeze your water bottles, which will double up as ice and drinking water. This is a great way to keep food and drinks cold on your camping trip.
Pack your box well
We recommend having two cool boxes for food and drinks. Store your drinks and snacks together in one cool box as this will be accessed the most. Any meal food should then be in a separate cool box and packed based on when you plan to cook the items. This will minimise exposure to warmth and stay cooler for longer.
Utilise airtight containers and zip-lock bags for meat, fish, and vegetables. This will also prevent food from getting wet and minimise cross-contamination. Board freezer packs are a great alternative to traditional ice packs. Layer them up between food or slide them down the sides of your cool box for the best performance.
Recommended - Thermos Freeze board
Monitor Temperature
The ideal cooler temperature should be below 4 degrees to prevent spoilage. Use a cooler thermometer to keep track of the temperature. You can also pre-cool any items before placing them in the cooler. Adding warm food to the cooler immediately will melt the ice faster and compromise the overall temperature.
A final note from us
With the right preparation and a reliable cool box, you can enjoy your food and drink at the right temperature. Whether you're camping for a weekend or an extended trip, follow our tips to ensure all your meals are fresh in the great outdoors!
