What is a Footprint?

A tent footprint is essentially a groundsheet protector. It is a separate flat fabric manufactured from waterproof tarpaulin made slightly smaller than the size of your tent. It can be placed underneath your main tent groundsheet. This is an essential item when completing your shopping list for your next camping trip.

What are the benefits of a Footprint?

There are several benefits for using a tent footprint while camping. The first is that having a footprint will help protect the bottom of your tent from getting wet, or being damaged from rough or stoney ground. A footprint adds another layer in between your tent groundsheet. Keeping it in great condition and expanding the lifespan of your tent.

Using a tent footprint will also help with pitching your tent when camping as it can be used as a guide. Simply lay your footprint on the ground and then erect your tent over the top. If the ground is particularly uneven it reduces the risk of your groundsheet being punctured from stones.

Majority of family tents are now manufactured with a sewn in groundsheet and this is often seen as a reason not to buy a footprint. If your groundsheet becomes dirty or wet when packing your tent away after a camping trip then this could easily rub off onto the tent. If you had a tent footprint this would add a protective layer and stop problems like this arising.
