Camping Activities: Geocaching
Getting Started with Geocaching. If you’re planning a long camping holiday, then you’ll certainly need some activities to keep you and family and/or friends amused and entertained. Something that is popular with many of our customers is geocaching and it may also appeal to you.
It’s basically a treasure hunting game that uses GPS-enable devices – such as your mobile phone to find the ‘treasure’. Using GPS coordinates to help direct you, the aim is to find that ‘geocache’, which is actually a container or cache, hidden at a specific location.
How to get started with geocaching on your camping trip
First off, it’s recommended that you register for the free Basic Membership at the Geocaching site. Now you can visit the “Hide & Seek a Cache” page where you can determine which ones are in the area that you’ll be staying in. Now enter the post code of where you’ll be and run a search.
You’ll be able to select a geocache to take the coordinates from. Enter these coordinates into your device. Now use the GPS system to help you find the geocache.
Once you have discovered what you’re looking for, open up the cache, then sign the logbook, close it up and put it back where you found it.
One of the great things about this camping activity is that all you need to take part is access to the Geocaching.com membership and a device that is GPS-enabled. This can be either a smart phone or if you have another type device such as a Tom-Tom, you can use that.
Where are the geocaches?
Fortunately, they are located all over the world, so wherever you’ve pitched your tent, you’ll be able to discover something to look for. Many geo-cachers will stash their cache in a location that has a special meaning to them or perhaps a special meaning to those taking part. It may be located at the end of a particularly long hike, at the highest point of an island or area or even underwater.
There are several different types of geocaches which you can read about here. This is partly what makes is so much fun to do.
Something that you may find appealing is that you can also use the geocache app to help you discover new walks and activities to do as part of your geocache hunt.
You might wonder what the link is to camping. Well it makes for a great activity – it can offer a walk with a purpose and if you’re holidaying with friends, you can even split into two teams and have fun with your own treasure hunt. You may even want to hide a couple of your own whilst you’re there. If you do, let us know.
