Choosing the right hiking boots will vary depending on the type of hiker you are. You will need to consider the following factors in order to get the most from your new hiking boots. Usage, Terrain and Weather these will determine if your boots are suitable or not. Read on to find out more.

One - Usage

The first factor to consider when buying hiking boots is the usage. How often are you planning to use your hiking boots? Are you a beginner hiker who is just getting into hiking or will you be someone who will need hiking boots for daily use? Beginner Hikers need to look for a soft, flexible shoe for comfortable walking and freedom for the ankle to move. If you're an intermediate walker carrying some weight then you will need a thicker, durable sole that's much harder to manipulate. This is to protect your toes from damage.

Two - Terrain

The terrain will affect your boots performance and this is an important factor to consider when buying hiking boots. If your route is flat then a walking shoe will suffice. You can also consider a walking mid boot depending on where your achilles hit your ankle. If you're hiking up hills then you will need a full boot to support your feet, ankle and calves. For a general rule; the steeper and rockier the terrain the higher and stiffer the boot required!

Three - Weather

The weather is a key factor when deciding which walking boots you should buy. As the majority of our customers are based in the UK we would generally recommend Leather hiking boots because leather is inherently waterproof and perfect for hiking in wet weather. The UK climate is so diverse that leather hiking boots are great for all seasons. Leather is waterproof, easy to clean and durable if you look after your boots correctly.

We also stock a range of Nubuck and canvas hiking boots in store which are also a popular choice for hiking. They can be waterproof by the boot having a built-in waterproof liner sandwiched between the boot outer layer and lining. This catches the water droplets keeping your foot nice and dry but the boot wet. Generally nubuck and canvas hiking boots are better suited to warmer climates hiking only in the summer months or abroad.
